Lapis lazuli, a vintage stone
Lapis lazuli is part of the silicate family. The stone owes its name to the Latin “lapis” which means stone and the Arabic “lazuli” meaning Azure. Its dark blue color and its value make it one of the most coveted rocks in the world of jewelry.
Lapis lazuli is an opaque stone with a matte shine, its rock is most often formed in limestone. Its blue color located between azure and ultramarine, mainly composed of lazurite, constitutes the entire value of the stone through its intensity. It also contains veins of white calcite or pyrite shards, but the more it has the less value it has. The small pyrite crystals, however, guarantee the authenticity of the stone.
Additionally, the largest production of Lapis Lazuli is located in the western Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan, where the stone has been mined for thousands of years. Indeed, Lapis lazuli is the richest stone in terms of history. In the past, it was the symbol of divine power and strength among the Egyptians. The color blue was for them signs of immortality, so he placed lapis lazuli amulets in their tombs in order to protect themselves. In the Middle Ages, this stone was seen as a strengthener for the body and mind. It was used for decoration and art, then was used for dyeing fabrics but also for painting. Lapis lazuli is therefore a stone with multiple powers, which has become very popular in jewelry.
