Les rubis les plus exceptionnels du monde

The most exceptional rubies in the world

We are taking advantage of this month of July, for which the birthstone is the ruby, to present to you some exceptional rubies, some of which have made history.

The Black Prince's Ruby and Timur's Ruby: rubies that are not rubies!!

One of the most famous rubies is the "Black Prince Ruby", which is actually not a ruby but a spinel. It is set in the British Imperial Crown and has a long history. It was worn by King Henry V at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 and has been passed down through generations of British royalty. It is now one of the Crown Jewels visible in London. Another famous "ruby", the Timur ruby, a very large cabochon cut "ruby" of 352.5 carats belonged to the Mughal emperor Timur (Tamerlane). It would also be a spinel. The stone bears an engraved Arabic inscription dating from the 14th century, named after the 5 sovereigns who owned it, from India to Persia.

The Rosser Reeves Star Ruby: an exceptional star ruby

Weighing an impressive 138.7 carats, the Rosser Reeves Star Ruby is one of the largest and most beautiful star rubies in the world. It was discovered in Sri Lanka and is today at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, where it is on public display.

The Sunrise ruby, an auction record

The Sunrise Ruby is a rare Burmese ruby weighing 25.59 carats. It is considered one of the most expensive rubies ever sold at auction. In 2015, it achieved a record price of more than $30 million at an auction held by Sotheby's in Switzerland.

The “King of Mogok” ruby, 1700 carats...

It was extracted from the subsoils of Burma, in the Mogok valley, rich in rubies and sapphires, still raw in its matrix. It was presented in 2019 at the Nantes Natural History Museum in France.

Exceptional rubies to collect

The most sought-after rubies remain, like these historic rubies, the "pigeon's blood" colored rubies, a deep red with a hint of blue, coming from Myanmar (formerly Burma). This origin is one of the most renowned sources of high quality rubies, sought after by royalty and major collectors. The Burmese believed that wearing rubies conferred invincibility in battle.
