Jewelry professions

Jewelry, a field where art and technique come together, relies on the talent of many artisans. From design to final production, each piece of jewelry is the result of meticulous and passionate work. In this article, we invite you to discover the main professions of jewelry and the unique skills that transform precious stones and metals into true works of art.

The jeweler-jeweler

The profession of jeweler is a profession with several facets. It encompasses both the activities of the jeweler and those of the jeweler. The first is responsible for creating, repairing and transforming gold jewelry, platinum Or silver, while the second focuses on the setting of precious stones or pearls in order to highlight them. Before creating the jewel, the jeweler will first design and draw the jewel, then give an estimate. Then, he will proceed to the manufacture of the jewel and make a first model in wax, then in metal. However, when it comes to the work of polishing and finishing, the jeweler often calls on specialists. It is a collaborative work.
The profession of jeweler therefore requires a sense of perfection, an ability to design pieces that stand out and finally, scientific knowledge for the preparation of alloys.

The crimper

The stone setter intervenes after the polishing and cutting of the stone. His role is to enhance the jewelry by affixing precious stones. He examines and determines the position of the stone and masters several techniques for inlaying stones such as the rail setting, the claw setting or the grain setting. The technique that will be used depends on several factors: the type of jewelry, the metal and the stone. The setter works hand in hand with the jeweler who entrusts him with the jewelry to be set.
Thus, the setter demonstrates great rigor, patience and attention to detail. Precision is essential for setting jewelry and handling precious stones.

The gemologist

The gemologist's mission is to study and assess precious stones (diamond, emerald, sapphire…), decorative stones (topaz, tourmaline, citrine…) and organic stones (coral, amber, mother-of-pearl, etc.). He must also be able to recognize and distinguish precious metals from alloys.
The study of stones then allows the gemologist to estimate their value using certain criteria such as their size, weight or color. The gemologist is also the one who will prove the authenticity of the stone. To carry out his mission, the gemologist needs a laboratory or a company capable of providing him with dedicated tools such as a magnifying glass, a polariscope, a microscope, UV lamps, a refractometer, etc. To practice this profession, skills in physics and chemistry, excellent vision, as well as thoroughness and precision, are essential.

The polisher

The polisher's job is to erase all traces present on the pieces he receives in their raw state, to obtain a quality surface. His goal is to give shine and brilliance to the jewelry. To do this, he uses emery paper, brushes, wires and polishing pastes. Polishing operations can be carried out by hand or by machine.
Therefore, the polisher must absolutely master polishing techniques, have a good knowledge of fine stones and precious stones and work with rigor and skill.

The lapidary

A specialist in cutting precious stones and fine stones, the lapidary shapes colored and semi-precious stones. From the rough stone, he will cut it to modify its shape and erase its defects to reveal the color and shine. of stone. So he cuts, saws, shapes and polishes the stones. He also prepares the materials and melts them.
The lapidary must therefore master precious and semi-precious stones, demonstrate precision, rigor and versatility to adapt his technique to each stone worked and respond to all stone cutting requests.
