Les différentes tailles de diamants

The different sizes of diamonds

When we observe a diamond, our eye is immediately attracted by its shape, a cut shape which is an integral part of the famous “4Cs of diamonds” (the 4 diamond criteria): the CUT. Several sizes exist for this exceptional gem.

Diamond cutting shapes

The round brilliant diamond

It is the most common size form and therefore also the most sold. More than 75% of jewelry on the market is set with a round brilliant diamond, but it is also the most expensive shape. The modern round brilliant cut has 56 facets plus the table, making 57 facets.

The facets have particular names specific to the diamond:

For the crown: 8 table corners or bezels, 8 stars and 16 bezels.

For the cylinder head: 8 bells and 16 ribs.

The princess cut diamond

The princess shape is very popular and is second in terms of best-selling waist shape after the round brilliant.

It is square or slightly rectangular in shape with pointed corners. The princess cut offers a very beautiful shine and can be found set on rings, earrings or in pendant.

The cushion-cut diamond

This size has been very popular in recent years. This cushion cut consists of 58 to 64 facets and it has slightly rounded corners which gives it a shape similar to that of a pillow.

The emerald cut diamond

The emerald cut is very often set on an engagement ring. Its waist shape is identical to the most common waist shape of theemerald (the green colored gem), hence its name.

The emerald diamond has a large table, so it is recommended to choose a very good color and clarity of an emerald cut diamond: they must be very good because with this shape the inclusions could be visible to the eye for purities lower than VS2.

The radiant cut diamond

This size is generally rectangular in shape but square radiators can also be found. The color of the radiant diamond should be at least G or H so that the stone is pleasing to the eye. You will mainly find a radiant diamond set on an engagement ring on the market.

The pear-shaped diamond

She is also very popular. The pear diamond combines the characteristics of the round cut and the marquise cut to create a very elegant cut resembling a teardrop.

The pear diamond is a very good choice for setting it on a engagement ring or mount it as a pendant.

The oval cut diamond

The oval diamond is an interesting alternative to the round shape. With its elongated shape, the oval cut exudes great natural elegance. An oval shape appears visually larger than other sized shapes, moreover when set on a ring, it helps refine and lengthen the fingers. An oval diamond will be significantly less expensive than a round brilliant, it is a very good choice for those on a smaller budget.

The heart-cut diamond

Its geometric heart shape symbolizes love and passion. Many choose a heart diamond for an engagement ring. But you can also offer it set on a pendant for a birthday or for Valentine's Day. The heart diamond generally has 56 to 60 facets. When properly cut and proportioned, the heart cut has a lot of shine and fire.

The marquise cut diamond

It is a very elegant size with its 2 points on each side. A marquise cut appears larger than a round brilliant diamond for equal weight due to the fact that this marquise shape is very elongated, plus the price of a marquise is much more affordable than a brilliant. The marquise diamond has 56 to 60 facets, depending on how it is cut.

The triangular cut diamond

This triangular cut is most often used to support a center diamond on an engagement ring, for example. We place on the ring 2 triangle diamonds on each side of the diamond center. It can also be set on a pendant.

Finally, some large houses have developed their own size (Cut) like the size Mellerio known as Meller or LVMH with its LV size.
