Tourmaline and its wide variety of colors
The name of this semi-precious stone comes from Sri Lanka, a legend says that tourmaline came down from heaven to Earth. During its descent, it would have crossed or slipped over a rainbow which would have given it its infinite variations of color. Hence its name meaning "the stone of a thousand colors".
Tourmaline has been known since the 3rd century BC but it has very often been confused with other minerals due to its wide variety of colors. This is why there are few stories, legends or beliefs linked to Tourmaline. Its late identification therefore makes it almost a recent stone with a relatively short history.
The origin and composition of the Tourmaline stone
The origin of the family of this mineral is magmatic in granite and pegmatite. It is not uncommon to find these gems near rock crystal, or even to be encrusted in rock crystal, such as quartz with tourmaline inclusions.
