Comment nettoyer un diamant ?

How to clean a diamond

Although diamond is the hardest gemstone of all, that is to say the most scratch-resistant (positioned at the highest, 10th, on the Mohs scale), it is still sensitive to its environment. Indeed, diamond jewelry are precious pieces that require specific maintenance, whether worn occasionally or daily.

How to restore the shine to your diamond jewelry?

To clean your diamond, it is recommended to soak it in warm water with a mild soap (without ammonia or phosphates) such as Marseille soap or dishwashing liquid, for 15 to 20 minutes, then gently rub it with a soft toothbrush, while making continuous gestures in a single direction. Finally, rinse it with clear water then wipe it carefully with a soft cloth, or a chamois if you have one on hand.

Why does your diamond lose its shine, even when you take care of it?

Diamond's main attribute is its scratch resistance, but it also has the particularity of being oleophilic, that is to say, it attracts grease. In fact, mining companies sometimes use this property to extract diamond crystals. The concentrated ore is then "washed" on a grease belt, by which the diamonds are attracted. This action therefore makes it possible to sort the diamond crystals, moreover.
When worn, your diamond jewelry will also attract sebum from your skin, creams and soap. Then covered with a thin greasy film, diamonds can become cloudy and lose their shine, which is why it is necessary to clean your diamond jewelry regularly, so that they retain their shine.

What precautions should you take to preserve your jewelry?

  • Avoid wearing your jewelry during manual activities that could damage them, such as sports, housework, gardening or DIY.

  • Avoid exposing your jewelry to water, especially at the beach, in the pool or in the shower. Salt water, chlorinated water or perspiration do not mix well with jewelry.

  • Be careful with rough surfaces, alcohol and cleaning products that can be aggressive.

  • Shocks should also be avoided, as they can cause marks or scratches of varying depth on the stones or metal. When wearing or storing several pieces of jewelry together, be sure to separate them to prevent any friction or snagging that could damage them.

  • Protect your jewelry from moisture, excessive heat and sudden temperature changes. It is best to remove them before washing your hands, taking a steam bath or entering a sauna.

  • Avoid wearing your jewelry during your beauty routine, exposing it to perfume, creams or other cosmetic products that could accumulate in the setting of your jewelry and more particularly under the stone and dull its shine over time.
